Story
On the 11th October I am giving up speaking for up to 24 hours, and instead, communicating through other methods, such as hand gestures, facial expressions, writing or the use of technology, to raise funds to support the important work of OIC Cambodia.
The aim of the challenge is to raise awareness and funds to establish much needed speech therapy services in Cambodia. Currently, more than 600,000 people have a communication or swallowing disorder, yet health services for them are nearly nonexistent, and there are no university trained speech therapists.
Being able to communicate is at the heart of being human, and for many of us it is something that we take for granted. Having a young daughter who is just leaning to speak makes me realise just how much joy I get from hearing her first words. It would break my heart if she were unable to communicate with me. In Australia there are an amazing range of services where children can get help, but in Cambodia there is nothing. It pains me to imagine what it must feel like to me a mother of a child who can't communicate, and not be able to get any help for them. Frustration, isolation and a fear for their future.
I would love it if you could donate what you can to this cause, the work that OIC Cambodia do is incredible and really has potential to impact and save lives. They are a small charity where every donation makes a huge impact.
With your support, children and families will receive the right support to communicate with each other and others.
Thank you so much xx
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to Global Development Group for project J703N OIC Cambodia to help with their efforts to bring speech therapy to the at least 600,000 Cambodians in need of services.
OIC Cambodia (Education) (Global Development Group – J703N)
OIC Cambodia (Education) is a Global Development Group approved aid and development project (J703N) which aims to address the gap in health services in Cambodia for more than 600,000 people with a communication or swallowing disability.
Communicating with others is at the heart of being human and helping people communicate is at the heart of what we do. We are working towards a Cambodia where each of these people receives the speech therapy services they need to communicate with those around them, and lead full and happy lives.
We have two significant goals to addressing the speech therapy needs in Cambodia:
- To train teachers in speech therapy-based inclusive education to better include children with communication disabilities into schools. This project will benefit 180 teachers and 5,400 children with communication disabilities across six provinces in Cambodia.
- To graduate the first generation of Cambodian speech therapists from a Cambodian university.
OIC Cambodia is proud to be a partner for Project J703N OIC Cambodia (Education) with Global Development Group (ABN: 57 102 400 993), an Australian DFAT approved Non-Government Organisation.
